this morning on "first look." the latest details on the investigation and resignation of cia general director david petraeus. president obama is taking his fiscal argument to a higher power than congress. fbi investigators want to know what caused a massive explosion that killed two and damaged over 30 homes, while leveling some completely. good morning to you. i'm veronica de la cruz. government officials say after admitting that an extramarital affair with his biographer paula

broadwell. a woman received harassing e-mails from broadwell. and the complaint led to the investigation that uncovered the affair. there's a growing chorus of questions from lawmakers as to when exactly the affair came to light, who in washington knew about it and when they were told. >> reporter: according to a senior federal official and close friend of david petraeus, 37-year-old jill kelly complained to fbi agents about being harassed by paula broadwell, david petraeus' biographer. a senior military official says jill kelly is involved in wounded warrior fund raising in tampa, is married. she and her husband are close petraeus family friends. officials say petraeus' downfall started when kelly was receiving harassing e-mails from broadwell. those e-mails led to the discover of mothers between

general petraeus and broadwell and were indicative of an extramarital affair. steven boilen is petraeus' former spokesperson. he spoke to him twice this weekend. and said his former pass boss is remorseful. >> in his words, he screwed up. >> reporter: a senior law enforcement official told nbc news, that they interviewed petraeus in october. members of congress are asking why the fbi did not inform them or the president sooner. >> we received no advanced notice. it was like, a lightning bolt. this is something that could have an affect on national security. i think we should have been told. there's a way to do it. >> reporter: this comes as we're learning more about the days leading up to petraeus' resignation. house majority leader eric cantor said in october he was

tipped off about the situation. he said i was contacted by an fbi employee, concerned that classified information had been compromised. and the potential risk to our national security. however, the president first learned about the incident on thursday, the day petraeus offered his resignation. a senior law enforcement official said the agent's call to a congressional staffer had no affect on the petraeus/broadwell investigation or the timing of the disclosure. still, lawmakers say there's a lot of questions that need to be answered. >> we've gone for several months. and it appears they're saying that the fbi didn't realize until election day that general petraeus was involved. it just doesn't add up. >> reporter: several of petraeus' former aides say broadwell had too much access to the general. she hasn't been shy about sharing details about her relationship with petraeus and their shared interest in

running. >> it was a test for both of us. but that was the foundation of our relationship. facing the fiscal cliff, now, the president's week is packed with meetings about it. tomorrow and wednesday he'll talk with business leaders and labor representatives, in preparation of his first round of bipartisan talks with congressional leaders on friday. >> reporter: today, top democrats drew a hard line. it's higher taxes on the wealthy or the nation goes over the fiscal cliff. >> if the republicans will not agree with in a, we will reach a point at the end of this year where all the tax cuts expire. and we'll start over next year. >> reporter: this, as one influential conservative called on republicans to give ground. >> let's have a serious debate. let's not scream and yell. it won't hurt the company. half of them voted democratic and half of them live in hollywood. >> reporter: but house speaker john boehner rejects any hike in

tax rates. he would raise revenues by closing loopholes in the tax code. >> raising tax rates will slow down our ability to create the jobs that everyone says they want. >> reporter: failure to agree by the end of the year would trigger deep spending cuts and tax cuts. that could mean $2,000 more in taxes for the typical household. the jobless rate soaring to 9.1% by the end of the year. and possibly, another recession. boehner and the president were close to a deal last year. the so-called grand bargain, 4 trillion in debt reduction. many think that blueprint still works. >> and the real problem is, uncriminaled entitlement spending and a government that has grown massively. not just under this administration. >> reporter: experts warn of serious damage to the economy, if the standoff drags on. >> three or four weeks from now,
